Lesson Plan: Walkabout

Walkabout

by James Vance Marshall

The mulga wood and burial platform, the valley-of-the-waters-under-the-earth and the paradote, an aborigine boy and two American children, all this and more make up the story Walkabout. The meeting of two cultures in the Australian outback form the essence of this novel. James Marshall provides young audiences with the beauty and the harshness of survival in "The Land Down Under".

The following lesson plan for a middle school literature/reading class is based on the novel Walkabout by James Vance Marshall. The activities and Internet sites provided will allow you to discuss these two countries and the indigenous peoples that populate them.
